Welcome to 1st Grade

Our Philosophy:

We understand that your child comes to us with unique experiences, interests and learning styles. Our goal is to truly know your child well and use this knowledge to guide, support and motivate him or her. We believe that good teaching requires continual professional development, personal reflection and collaboration. We value parent involvement at every level and encourage you to partner with us to give your child the most powerful and joyous learning experience possible.

Behavior Expectations:

We have high expectations for the students in our room. We expect the students to achieve academically to their fullest potential. We expect students to contribute in a positive manner to our classroom. The following is a list of rules for classrooms.

  1. Show respect
  2. Make good decisions
  3. Solve problems

We will be using the “color chart” system to help monitor these behaviors. You will receive information about your child’s behavior each week.

Take Home Folders:

The binders listed on the supply list will be used as a take home binder. Please check this binder nightly and return them each day. All important papers and finished work will be sent home in this folder.

Your child will have homework each Monday. It will reflect the skills that we are covering.   If the homework appears to be too difficult or too easy for your child, feel free to modify it.

We want to make sure you are informed of upcoming events and what your child is learning in school. A weekly homework page will come home each Monday. It will contain schedules and information pertinent to the coming week.

School Procedures:

At Wilbur E. Lucas Elementary we emphasis punctuality, therefore we encourage all students to be on time, at 7:45 in school. The class starts at 7:45 o’clock in order to be on task. Every morning there is a theme for the students to work on during this time for a grade. If the student cannot make it on time, they will miss a grade for that subject, and it will reflect on the report card.

Things You Can Do At Home To Help Your Child At School:

*     Read to your child and allow them to read to you.

*     Ask your child about school and take an interest in what they are learning.

*     Make sure they get enough sleep.

*     Set limits on the amount of television they watch.

School Supplies:

Thanks to all the parents for sending all their school supplies, but if you have not done yet, please send them as soon as possible, especially notebooks and pencils .The items need to be labeled with your child’s name. Check with your child during the year to make sure they still have the supplies they need.

AR Points:

Your child will be participating in the Accelerated Reader program.

What is Accelerated Reader (AR)?

AR is a computer program that helps teachers and librarians manage and monitor children’s independent reading practice. Your child picks a book at his own level and reads it at his own pace. When finished, your child takes a short quiz on the computer. (Passing the quiz is an indication that your child understood what was read.) AR gives children, teachers, and librarians feedback based on the quiz results, which the teacher then uses to help your child set goals and direct ongoing reading practice.

Education is a partnership between home and school. We value parent involvement at every level and encourage you to partner with us. In order for this partnership to be effective, we need to be able to communicate. Please feel free to call, or write a note if you have concerns or questions about your child’s education. We are always available to schedule a conference to discuss any issue or concern you have regarding your child.
